Last Spring our Club woke up to the reality that there are actually other animals in the world than ferrets. And these animals are even worth getting to know. So, we decided to check out what's on offer, and try out riding with Icelandic horses, which are known for their incredible calmness.

On April, 21st 2003, in other words Easter Monday, about a dozen of us headed, without our ferrets, to Torppi Stables in Pukkila. Or rather, tried to head there, some of us took the scenic route. A two hour trail ride was in store for us. There were some experienced riders among us, and there were some that were coming into contact with a horse for the first time. But we all set out and came back together, thanks to the excellent Icelandics and experienced guides.

On top of all the regular gaits: walk, trot and canter, we also got to try out tölt, a four-beat running walk specific to Icelandics. And above all, we got to enjoy beautiful weather and the wonderful closeness to nature. We each gained heart-warming memories: an automatic horse that corrected its rider's incorrect position, an overly lazy horse that just didn't want to keep up with the others, and everyone, even the beginners, got to experience galloping down trails through the woods.

If only we had know before-hand that that day was the first warm day of Spring! The temperature rose to over 20 C, a perfect picnic weather. Maybe next time.

Here you'll find photos of our icelandics and the contact information to the stables.
